Art

Intent

At Ss Peter and Paul, our art and design curriculum aims to engage and inspire pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to explore, experiment and create personal works of art, craft and sculpture. Our curriculum aims for all children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum, making strong cross-curricular links with the wider curriculum where possible. Art is a form of expression that transcends the spoken word and embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. Therefore, we believe the arts should be accessible to all pupils and should encourage them to develop a culturally rich understanding of the world around them. We strive for our children to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to develop the confidence to be illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, curators, or printmakers of the future.

Implementation

Our art leaders, in collaboration with expertise from external providers, have designed a carefully sequenced, progressive, ambitious curriculum based around the National Curriculum for Art and Design which encompasses:

· Well planned, progressive teaching sequences with links to prior learning

· Creative learning journeys and supporting programme of CPD for staff

· Taught as discrete projects with meaningful links to the wider curriculum where appropriate

· Learning evidenced in individual art sketchbooks

· The study of a rage of unique and diverse artists to inspire and stimulate children’s creativity

· Key vocabulary taught discretely and built on progressively

· Assessment records for each project with opportunity for teacher and pupil self-assessment

· Children access and develop use of a wide range of artistic tools and mediums within the five selected areas: drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, digital art

Impact

As a result of our art and design Curriculum, our children will show clear enjoyment, self-expression and confidence in art. They will develop the mindset of an artist, being able to think critically and develop the skills and attributes needed as they progress through all key stages. Pupils will become increasingly confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, collage and digital art and this will be evident in their sketchbooks and displayed work. Children will discuss and recall learning with confidence and use technical vocabulary with accuracy.
