What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional funding introduced by the Government in April 2011 allocated to schools to boost the attainment for children from low-income families registered for Free School Meals in the last 6 years, looked after children and service children.
The Government funds £1320 per eligible pupil and £1900 per Looked After Child or child adopted from care. Schools can choose how they wish to spend this money based upon their own knowledge of individual pupil needs.
Context
When making decisions about using Pupil Premium funding it is important to consider the context of the school and the subsequent challenges faced. Common barriers for FSM children can be less support at home, weak language and communication skills, lack of confidence, more frequent behaviour difficulties, and attendance and punctuality issues. There may also be complex family situations that prevent children from flourishing. The challenges are varied and there is no “one size fits all.”
There is no expectation that all Pupil Premium children will receive identical support. Some children will need more than others and each child is individual with individual circumstances. The school considers how to allocate Pupil Premium money to different interventions and projects on an annual basis, following rigorous data analysis and careful consideration of the needs of the pupils within this group.
The Rationale behind the Pupil Premium Funding
We ensure that Teaching and Learning meets the needs of all our children and that they experience quality first teaching. Following assessment the children who are in receipt of Pupil Premium funding are allocated additional support according to their requirements.
It is our aim that our work relating to Pupil Premium will ensure that all children will achieve at least age related expectations in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. We also ensure that no child is disadvantaged through the inability to pay for school trips, residential visits, music lessons and extra-curricular activities etc.
How do we spend Pupil Premium
We talk to parents and carers of children receiving the funding, to ask for their ideas on what will help most. Some children will already be doing well in English, Maths or other subjects, but there may be things we can do to stretch them further, to help them aim high, or to build their confidence – like having a mentor, visits to other schools, taking part in activities to develop social or language skills (increased parental involvement, social & emotional learning, collaborative learning, after school programmes, sports participation, arts participation, support learning mentor, behaviour interventions).
If children are behind in English, Mathematics or other subjects, we may arrange for them to have special small group or one-to-one teaching. We call these ‘intervention programmes’. We choose the classroom approaches and intervention programmes that research shows works and we may use some of the money to support teachers’ salaries. We spend some money on training for staff to make sure they are up to date with the latest knowledge.
Measuring the Impact
The progress and achievement of all children is monitored on a termly basis. Information from lesson observations, children’s books and parent/pupil feedback also inform our analysis and help us to target support. Any child, regardless of receipt of Pupil Premium funding, who is identified as needing intervention, will receive appropriate targeted support.
Monitoring and evaluation is led by the Principal and Senior Leadership Team, the SENCO and the Local Academy Members through regular meetings and discussions.
The school evaluates the impact of spending for each Pupil Premium child and this enables us to assess which support strategies are working. If your child takes part in an intervention programme we will also measure how he/she is doing at the start of the programme and the end, so we can measure the difference.
How can parents contribute to the success of the Pupil Premium Funding?
If your child is eligible for free school meals it is worth registering them even if your child does not take the school meal. Claiming your entitlement will provide the school with funding which will help your child. In addition, your family could benefit from support for after school sports, residential trips and more.
